The Morkhur goat is one of the rare animals of the mountainous regions of Central and North Asia, including Tajikistan, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Morkhur plays an important role in the ecosystem, biodiversity, tourism, etc., and its conservation at the global level is important, given that this rare animal is on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Currently, the number of this rare animal in Tajikistan is more than 6,000. This indicator reflects the fact that Tajikistan’s experience in protecting and preserving this rare animal is considered one of the most successful in the world.
In May 2024, the United Nations General Assembly took into account the initiative of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Honorable Emomali Rahmon, to declare International Day of the Morkhur goat and adopted a relevant Resolution.
It should be mentioned that this resolution recognized the importance of reversing the unprecedented global decline in biodiversity and emphasized the conservation and preservation of the natural habitat of the Morkhur goat as an ecological necessity. It also stated the importance of international and regional cooperation on the conservation of the Morkhur goat, recognizing the national and regional initiatives that are already being implemented. With the adoption of the resolution, May 24 was declared the International Morkhur goat Day, and this day is celebrated annually by holding regional and international conferences and events, and taking effective measures to protect and conserve this rare animal.
