March 21 has been declared the International Glacier Day, which will be celebrated annually worldwide starting today and this year. It should be recalled that on December 14, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly, at its 77th session, unanimously adopted the resolution “2025 – International Year of Glaciers”, which was proposed by the Republic of Tajikistan. It is considered one of the rare resolutions, as it includes both the declaration of an International Day and an International Year.
At the initiative of Tajikistan, the United Nations General Assembly adopted eight resolutions, and our country has repeatedly hosted high-level global conferences on important water issues. At the same time, at the initiative of our country, including in 2016, the Resolution of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028” was adopted.
It should be mentioned that the support of most countries of the world for the holding of the International Conference on Glacier Protection in Dushanbe, the capital of our beloved country, in 2025 is a testament to the pioneering state and the founder of constructive and inclusive initiatives of the Republic of Tajikistan. Indeed, the holding of this Conference can provide a basis for an international scientific, legal, political, regional and global dialogue on solving the problems of eliminating the risks of melting glaciers and providing the planet’s population with water.
